Order has all but given approach to the violent impulses represented by Jack’s tribe. When rescuers arrive to take the boys again to civilization, Ralph symbolically regains authority.

The boys once more reenact the looking of the pig and attain a high pitch of frenzied energy as they chant and dance.

Even Ralph and Piggy themselves get swept up within the ritual dance around Jack’s banquet hearth.

To Piggy’s dismay, Jack grabs his thick glasses and uses them to reflect the solar’s rays, efficiently creating a fireplace. Golding had lots of experience in coping with schoolboys, for he was a trainer in Britain for a few years.

Ralph, now abandoned by most of his supporters, journeys to Castle Rock to confront Jack and secure the glasses. Taking the conch and accompanied solely by Piggy, Sam, and Eric, Ralph finds the tribe and demands that they return the precious object. Confirming their whole rejection of Ralph’s authority, the tribe seize and bind the twins under Jack’s command. Ralph and Jack engage in a fight which neither wins before Piggy tries as soon as extra to address the tribe. Any sense of order or safety is permanently eroded when Roger, now sadistic, intentionally drops a boulder from his vantage level above, killing Piggy and shattering the conch.
